THE RNF '96 DESCRIPTION

The RNF '96 emerged from LOST's intensive refinement of fish designs in 1995-1996, gaining legendary status through the performances of teenage pros Chris Ward and Cory Lopez, who used these boards to make their mark on the surfing world.

Unlike traditional fish designs that were influenced by kneeboards, the RNF-'96 drew inspiration from high-performance twin fins of the late 70s/early 80s, featuring a more pulled-in tail for maximum performance across all wave conditions, making it not just a small-wave solution but a versatile performance craft that revolutionized modern surfboard design.

Key Features

  • Flexibility and Strength: The board is both lightweight and flexible, yet surprisingly strong, with added buoyancy and stability due to its construction.
  • Design: The RNF 96 is inspired by the original fish designs from 1996, with a focus on high-performance, competitive minded, twin fins.
  • Rocker Curves: The rocker curves remain engrained to the original proven curves.
  • Outline Curves: Both nose and tail were usually the same width at 12" and remain true.
  • Fins: The board comes with a thruster setup, allowing it to be ridden as a twin plus one, a pure twin fin, or with all three standard thruster fins for different conditions and a more performance feel.
  • Suitability: The RNF 96 is suitable for both beginners and experienced riders, offering an all-around, rip-able fun machine for a wide level of surfers.

LightSpeed is our proprietary surfboard construction built with lightweight EPS foam and high strength epoxy resin.  LightSpeed uses a combination of Rapid-Reflex Carbon Fiber as well vibration dampening Innegra-Fibers, woven into the finest custom performance fiberglass cloth.

Like the name implies, LightSpeed is both light and exceptionally fast, allowing you to take your surfing to new levels of speed and Pro-formance.  Developed in-house, our crew of board builders worked closely with our top Jr and WQS team riders to create the best possible technology for High Pro-formance small wave and every day surfing. After well over a year of testing various versions, and R&D with some of the world’s best young surfers, we are now making this exciting custom surfboard construction available to all.

LIGHTSPEED SURFBOARD CONSTRUCTION

LIGHT SPEED Custom Composite features:

Ultra-Light / Ultra-Lively Foam Core: Steam molded, High Strength-to-Weight Ratio, fused cell, water resistant, stringer-less EPS foam core.

High-Strength, Flexible, Impact Resistant, Epoxy Resin System. Woven Carbon Fiber Centerline “Stringer” (top and bottom): Engineered to add both strength and Rapid-Reflex “pop”, with just enough release to feel forgiving underfoot. The Carbon loads up under foot pressure, and springs upon release.

Fused Carbon, Tail Reinforcement Patches: Transfers more direct input into rail and adds strength.

LOST LIGHTSPEED SURFBOARDS

Centerline Aligned Carbon “Exo-Stringers”: Enable natural Torsional Twist, similar to a wood stringer board, but lighter, and with a much faster reflex reaction and more “pop”.

Innegra Infused, Engineered Composite Fiberglass: A multi weave (6oz lengthwise, woven with 4oz, rail to rail) fiberglass, top and bottom, adds significant break strength, while keeping the boards Ultra-light and Ultra-lively.

5oz Warp-Weave Fiberglass: A multi weave (6oz lengthwise, woven with 4oz, rail to rail) fiberglass, top and bottom, adds significant break strength, while keeping the boards

Ultra-light and Ultra-lively.

LightSpeed – Light and exceptionally fast technology, allowing you to take your small wave and everyday surfing to new levels of speed and Pro-formance.

Matt Biolos and the team at LOST Surfboards have introduced their innovation in surfboard construction: Black Sheep Technology.

This groundbreaking approach to carbon fiber construction delivers an electric, lively feel while maintaining durability and performance.

The defining feature of Black Sheep boards is their unique tri-directional carbon fiber deck wrap. Unlike traditional carbon constructions, this specialized layup uses three distinct directional layers: one running nose to tail and two at opposing 45-degree angles. This configuration creates a responsive flex pattern while preventing the board from becoming too stiff.

"We wanted to make a really pliable, forgiving, lively kind of playful construction," explains Biolos. The construction keeps carbon only on the deck, stopping at the rails to maintain torsional flex and prevent the board from becoming overly rigid.

Each Black Sheep board features:

  • 1.5-pound EPS core
  • Double-layered fiberglass bottom
  • Tri-directional carbon fiber deck
  • Non-crimp weave technology for optimal strength

The result? A lightweight, responsive board that maintains durability while delivering performance in various conditions. Pro surfers are already embracing the technology, with extensive testing at wave pools and in ocean conditions showing promising results.

LOST RNF '96 FAQS

The Lost RNF 1996 surfboard combines retro fish design elements with modern performance enhancements. It is available in LightSpeed construction and Black Sheep construction.

LightSpeed Construction: This technology enhances floatation and responsiveness with approximately 2 liters more buoyancy than traditional PU boards. It incorporates strategic carbon placement for improved flex and durability.

Black Sheep Construction: According to a comparison between the Black Sheep and LightSpeed constructions, the Black Sheep construction offers more drive through turns and feels more explosive in the lip. It also seems to be more resilient, showing fewer pressure dents. The RNF 96  is a versatile groveler that performs beyond expectations, functioning as an all-around, rip-able fun machine for a wide range of surfers

The RNF 1996 excels in both small and larger wave conditions.

It offers excellent paddle power and easy wave entry, making it responsive in mushy surf. In bigger waves, it maintains control at speed, demonstrating its versatility across different surfing environments.

Surfers have reported that it handles everything from knee-high waves to overhead conditions effectively.

For optimal performance, two fin setups are recommended:

  • Mark Richards 2+1 Setup: This configuration includes twin fins for speed and flow, with an optional trailer fin for added control, making it ideal for smaller waves.
  • Power Twins Configuration: This setup features a larger base for increased drive and holding power through turns, suitable for more aggressive surfing.

Yes, the RNF '96 is considered suitable for beginners as well as intermediate surfers transitioning to performance boards.

Its forgiving design allows new surfers to develop their skills without sacrificing performance, making it a great choice for those just starting out

The Lightspeed construction of the RNF 96 is designed for durability

With proper care, surfers have reported minimal pressure dings even after a year of regular use, even among surfers weighing over 200 pounds. This makes it reliable option for frequent surfers.

The Black Sheep construction is also remarkably durable, outperforming many other high performance constructions in terms of resilience to pressure dings. The use of Triax - NCF Carbon fiber, combined with multiple layers of fiberglass, enhances overall strength and longevity.

According to one surfer, even after two years of frequent use, the deck construction holds up remarkably well, maintaining its flex and spring.
