📣 Marjorie's Inspiring Journey into Surfing at 68

Have you ever thought, "Am I too old to start surfing?" Marjorie Chasset's story will make you think again. At an age when many are settling into retirement, Marjorie caught her first wave and embarked on an exhilarating journey that proves it's never too late to pursue your passions.

A Leap of Faith at 68

Marjorie's surfing adventure began unexpectedly during a family trip to Venice Beach, California. At 68 years old, she spotted an Airbnb promotional offer for a surfing lesson and decided to give it a try. Despite being surrounded by younger participants, Marjorie's presence inspired others, including two middle-aged men who joined the class after seeing her.

From First Wave to Full-Time Passion

That first experience, though filled with falls, ignited a spark in Marjorie. She describes it as her first taste of "stoke" – the exhilaration that surfers often talk about. This feeling was so powerful that it motivated her to pursue surfing seriously back in her home in Northern California.

Marjorie's Board and the Game-Changing Halo Fin

Marjorie currently rides a 9'3" Soleil Ero Velvet Hour longboard, measuring 23" wide and 3" thick. But what really transformed her surfing experience was the addition of the Takayama Halo Fin.

    The Halo Fin Difference

Marjorie raves about how the Halo Fin has improved her surfing:

    1. Enhanced Turning: The fin allows for better maneuverability, enabling Marjorie to make turns she couldn't before.
    2. Versatility: She uses it as a single fin on her longboard, finding it effective whether she's standing in the middle of the board or further back.
    3. Confidence Boost: The fin's performance has made surfing even more enjoyable for Marjorie, encouraging her to push her boundaries.

Marjorie's enthusiasm for the Halo Fin isn't just personal preference. During a surf session in Southern California, she let her surf coach try her board equipped with the Halo Fin. His reaction was overwhelmingly positive. As a much more accomplished surfer, he was impressed with the setup, calling it "great" and praising its performance. This professional endorsement further validated Marjorie's experience with the fin.

    The Health Benefits of Surfing

Marjorie's story isn't just inspiring – it's a testament to the health benefits of surfing, especially for older adults:

    1. Cardiovascular Health: Surfing provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, helping to maintain heart health.
    2. Strength and Balance: Paddling and balancing on the board strengthen core muscles and improve overall balance.
    3. Mental Well-being: The combination of physical activity, nature, and the meditative aspect of waiting for waves can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health.
    4. Social Connections: Surfing often leads to new friendships and a sense of community, vital for emotional well-being.

According to a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, surfing can be classified as a vigorous physical activity, burning an average of 125 to 250 calories per hour. Research from California State University, San Marcos, found that surfers aged 50 and older reported high levels of life satisfaction and physical well-being.

    Never Too Late to Start

Marjorie's journey reminds us that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing new passions. Her story encourages others to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges, regardless of age. The addition of the right equipment, like the Takayama Halo Fin, can make a significant difference in one's surfing experience and progression.Whether you're 18 or 80, the ocean doesn't discriminate. So why not give surfing a try? You might just catch the wave of a lifetime and discover a new lease on life, just like Marjorie did.Remember, the best surfer out there is the one having the most fun. So grab a board, consider a Halo Fin, hit the waves, and start your own inspiring surfing journey today!

    Understanding the Box Jellyfish Threat

Box jellyfish, belonging to the Phylum Cnidaria, are known for their potent sting and unique appearance

    • These creatures typically appear 8 to 10 days after the full moon, making their presence a predictable yet dangerous occurrence in Hawaiian waters.
    • Their squarish, bell-shaped bodies give them their name, but it's their stinging cells, or nematocysts, that pose a real threat to swimmers and surfers

🔨 Why The HELIX Leash Sells Good??

Here at Hawaiian South Shore Surf Shop, HELIX Leash is the #1 selling leash, Why? Here's what our customers say:

"Awesome leash! Very strong and one of the best I've used." - DANE MINAMI

"Really great to reduce tangling, but tugs hard on the leg and hip if it’s pumping…" - J.Mark Ingoglia

"Best leash out right now comfortable, reliable, ad doesn’t tangle as much as other leashes I’ve used" - Brent Ortiz

"This leash is an everyday leash for playing with my Harley Ingleby Moe(s) or Mid 6 boards. Whether the waves are small or pumping it's a must have. No worries"  - Milton Kono

The HELIX leash has become our top-selling leash at Hawaiian South Shore, and for good reason. In a recent interview with Keoni, we delved into the innovative features that make this leash stand out from the competition.

The HELIX leash's revolutionary design incorporates multiple materials that stretch at different points during use. This unique construction includes a standard urethane core surrounded by a titanium helix, which provides a controlled stretch that won't extend indefinitely. This feature ensures a comfortable yet secure connection to your board, reducing the risk of leash-related injuries and maintaining consistent length over time.

A testament to the HELIX leash's durability comes from pro surfer Nathan Florence. During a remarkable 45-day stretch of consistent waves at Pipeline, ranging from 6 feet to third reef conditions, Nathan used prototype HELIX leashes. He reported that these leashes maintained their original length throughout this intense period of use, a feat he believed no other leash could have accomplished.

Key benefits of the HELIX leash include:

    1. Durability: The leash maintains its length even after extended use in challenging conditions.
    2. Comfort: The controlled stretch reduces strain on the surfer's leg and hip joints.
    3. Tangle-free design: The leash's slight rigidity helps prevent tangling around your legs while waiting for waves.
    4. Extended stem and horn: This feature keeps the leash away from your ankle, reducing irritation.
    5. Improved cuff design: The cuff provides the right balance of flexibility and structure for comfort and longevity.

🏄‍♀️ Meet Brittany Hokulani Penaroza - From Island Grom to Global Wave Chaser

When you think of the North Shore's surf scene, images of legendary breaks and thunderous waves often come to mind. But among the seasoned pros, a new generation of surfers is making waves. Brittany Hokulani Penaroza is one such rising star, carving her own path from local Hawaiian waters to international surf spots.

Brittany's journey began on the shores of Oahu at the tender age of nine. Inspired by her father and older brother Billy, she quickly fell in love with the sport. "My dad was the one that would take me out and push me into waves, but my brother, who is 11 years older than me, was the one that inspired me to get started. I really looked up to him back then—still do," Brittany recalls

Her progression from local grom to sponsored athlete wasn't a conscious decision but a natural evolution. Brittany's father entered her in local Menehune contests like the Rell Sun and China Uemura events, where she spent entire days at the beach, collecting memories and goodie bags. As she continued to enjoy herself at each event, more opportunities arose, and Brittany kept saying yes

Interestingly, a pivotal moment in Brittany's career came when she decided to stop competing around age 20. "I started to care less about 'ripping' and rode more alternative boards, which fit my style better. That's when it seems like people started to take notice. That's also when I began getting consistently paid by sponsors for the first time," she explains

Today, Brittany's Instagram feed @britroza is a testament to her dream lifestyle - traveling the world, chasing perfect waves, and getting paid to do what she loves. Her success story isn't just about natural talent; it's a tale of dedication, perseverance, and smart career moves.

    Balancing Act

Maintaining a consistent routine while surfing is challenging for Brittany. Living by the ocean and chasing swells requires flexibility. Her general rule is to move in some way at least once a day if she's not surfing, and she tries to post or create new content daily. When there's swell, she drops everything, and when there isn't, she uses that time to catch up on other work.

    Beyond the Waves

While surfing takes up most of her time, Brittany is drawn to activities that cultivate presence. "I focus a lot on breathwork, yoga, and various types of training. I'm really drawn to activities that help cultivate presence, pulling me out of my head and into my body," she shares

    Hawaiian Roots

Brittany's Hawaiian heritage deeply influences her approach to surfing and life. "Being Hawaiian deeply influences how I carry myself. I'm really proud of where I come from. Our kupuna were strong, brave, and deeply spiritual, which inspires me to live in a similar way," she explains. In recent years, surfing has become more of a spiritual practice for her, connecting with the elements and moving with nature with minimal resistance

    Riding the Waves

Brittany's love for diverse boards allows her to enjoy surfing in all conditions. She's particularly enthusiastic about the COCO HO TRYST model. "I'm in love with it! You really don't need much to have fun—the feeling of the board under your feet, even just going straight, is incredible. You get so much drive and glide through sections," she raves.

Brittany Hokulani Penaroza's journey from local grom to global wave chaser is an inspiration to young surfers everywhere. Her story reminds us that with passion, dedication, and a bit of aloha spirit, it's possible to turn the thing you love most into a fulfilling career.

What advice would you give to young surfers, especially girls, who dream of following in your footsteps?

I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else, but this industry is tough to make money—the lifestyle is incredible but you often need other side hustles. Be proactive and build connections in and outside of surfing. It's important to be kind, network, and diversify your skills. Lean into your other passions and figure out how to blend them with surfing. That’s what will give you the most longevity. Also, know your worth and stay positive. I've thought about quitting many times, but things tend to work out as long as you don’t give up!

🌊 The Mark Richards Twin + 1 Fin: A Perfect Blend of Speed and Control

Twin surfboards offer several performance benefits that make them a favorite among many surfers. The reduced drag from two fins allows for quicker acceleration and higher top speeds, while the fin placement enables tighter turns and more responsive directional changes.

Twin fins provide a unique feeling of flow and connection with the wave, making them suitable for a wide range of wave conditions, from small and mushy to overhead and hollow. These characteristics make twin surfboards versatile and appealing to both seasoned pros and curious beginners, potentially revolutionizing their surfing experience.

The Mark Richards (MR) Twin + 1 Fin is a revolutionary surfboard fin setup that combines the best features of twin fins and thrusters. Developed by legendary surfer and shaper Mark Richards over two decades ago, this fin configuration was born from a request by Soeda Surfboards Japan to create twin fins for their team riders.

Richards responded by designing a new twin fin with a small stabilizer template, which received overwhelmingly positive feedback. The MR Twin + 1 Fin has stood the test of time, with Richards himself continuing to use this setup 24 years later, demonstrating its enduring performance and appeal. Learn More Here...

🚀 The Driver That You Need...

The board with speed, power, and control in a balanced and refined shape. The Driver 3.0 has more tail rocker and a deeper double to single concave, which means a more advanced feel and greater responsiveness through tight-radius turns in the pocket. The hips have been narrowed a touch and the rails have been upgraded, making the board that much more advanced and sensitive. To balance this out, the width is carried a bit farther forward toward the nose, providing extra volume up front to provide a drivey feel for front-footed surfers. In short, this is a slightly more high-performance, pro-level design, made for maximum maneuverability. Check It Out Here...

💨 Hawaiian South Shore October Member of the Month: Daniel Kaahanui

When and why did you initially get into surfing?
My dad was a Lifegaurd at Kailua Beach and Waikiki Walls, so I was always was in the water bodyboarding since the age of 4. When was 17 years old, I meet 2 of the best Shapers on Oahu in 1990. I meet Wade and Kerry Tokoro out at Crouching Lion surf break. They ended up taking me under their wing and got me to start surfing. These 2 brothers really inspired me and I wanted to surf like they did one day. Wade could surf anything from 1foot -20 feet and Kerry was ripping and winning the local contest on Oahu.

Did you have a time period you laid off from surfing?

Yes I stopped surfing after my friend Sean Starn got me into foiling. I quit surfing for about 5 years

If so, when and why did you start back up?

I started back up surfing about 2 years ago now and having been out of surfing and back from foiling was the hardest thing ever but now I enjoy surfing way more and having fun. Now I go back and forth from surfing to foiling depending my time for work, conditions, spots and crowds.

What is your favorite thing about surfing?

With surfing I can be connected with the waves more. Getting barreled or throwing spray where foiling you can’t throw spray like surfing. Surfing makes foiling a lot more fun and foiling make surfing fun.
