šŸ† The Pipeline Masters: When Tradition Meets Change

Ā

Big waves of discussion are rolling through the surf community as the Pipeline Masters approaches its 53rd year.

Just weeks before the December 8-20 event window, controversy erupted when several of Pipeline's most experienced surfers were initially left off the invitation list.

The debate caught fire on social media when professional surfer Josh Moniz spoke up: "This isn't about me trying to get an invitationā€”it's about what the Pipeline Masters represents to surfing and the respect that this wave and event deserve." His post sparked a wider conversation about preserving the event's prestigious heritage while adapting to change.

In response, organizers adjusted the competitor list, adding respected Pipeline surfer Jamie O'Brien and others.

The event will also feature an exciting women's division, including local Hawaiian talent and international competitors.

Want to learn more about the history of the Pipeline Masters and this year's full competitor list? Check out our detailed article here.

Whether you're a longtime surf fan or new to the sport, you can catch all the action December 8-20, 2024, either via livestream or by joining the crowd on the beach to witness surfing history in person.

šŸŒŗ Tiare Lawrence: Maui's Modern Renaissance Wahine

There's a saying in Hawaii that the ocean connects us all. No one embodies this more than Tiare Lawrence, a Lahaina-raised waterwomen whose life beautifully intertwines Hawaiian culture, ocean sports, and community advocacy.

A Life Shaped by Land and Sea

Growing up in Lahaina, Tiare's journey is uniquely Hawaiian. Before becoming known for her fearless approach to big waves, she was a professional hula dancer, performing everywhere from local ceremonies to Tokyo Disneyland. This foundation in Hawaiian cultural arts flows through to her surfing style, where she emphasizes the same balance and fluidity found in hula.

More Than Just a Surfer

While you might find Tiare charging waves at spots like Honolua Bay or Peahi (Jaws), her most important work happens on land. As the outdoor pursuits director at Makena Resort Services and a coach at Hawaiian Canoe Club, she's dedicated to sharing her love of ocean sports with others. But perhaps her most inspiring project is at Kahoma, where she and her family are reclaiming ancestral land by restoring ancient taro patches and reviving native aquatic species.

Teaching the Next Generation

"Understanding the rhythm of the ocean is crucial for any surfer," Tiare often says when coaching young water enthusiasts. At the Hawaiian Canoe Club, she focuses on building confidence while teaching respect for nature - two principles she believes are essential for any ocean athlete.

Bridging Past and Present

Through workshops and community events, Tiare shares knowledge about traditional Hawaiian practices like sustainable fishing and native plant cultivation. Her work demonstrates how modern surf culture can honor and preserve Hawaiian traditions rather than replace them.

Looking to the Future

Tiare's story reminds us that being a waterperson in Hawaii means more than just riding waves - it's about understanding and protecting the delicate balance between land, sea, and community. Whether she's surfing, teaching, or restoring ancestral lands, Tiare Lawrence stands as an inspiration for anyone looking to connect more deeply with Hawaiian culture through surfing.

šŸŒŠ Kiss Back Pain Goodbye: A Surfer's Guide to Core Strength

Whether you're paddling out for dawn patrol or sitting at a desk dreaming of waves, that nagging low back pain can put a real damper on your stoke. But here's some good news: physical therapy expert Christine Lynders has developed a revolutionary approach that's helping surfers and other active people reclaim their pain-free lifestyle.

The Secret Weapon Against Back Pain With 27 years of experience, Christine Lynders isn't just another wellness guru. She's the author of "SUCK IT IN! The Proven Solution to Eliminate Low Back Pain Forever and... Get a Flatter Stomach," and she understands what it takes to get back in the lineup pain-free.

Beyond the Six-Pack Here's something that might surprise you: those surface abs you see in surf magazines aren't the key to a healthy back. The real magic happens in your deep core muscles - think of them as your body's built-in wetsuit, providing stability and support for every move you make on the wave.

Try This Simple Technique:

  1. Stand tall, like you're checking the surf
  2. Place one hand on your lower belly
  3. Take a deep breath in
  4. As you exhale, gently draw your navel towards your spine
  5. Hold this engagement while breathing normally for 5-10 seconds
  6. Release and repeat

Why This Matters for Surfers A strong deep core doesn't just mean less pain - it translates to better balance on your board, more powerful turns, and longer sessions without fatigue. Whether you're a longboarder cruising the nose or a shortboarder hitting the lip, your core is the foundation of every move you make.

Ready to Transform Your Surfing?

  1. Practice the "Suck It In" technique daily (even when checking the surf report)
  2. Pick up Christine's book for the complete program
  3. Visit www.YourVirtualPhysicalTherapist.com for video tutorials

Stop by Hawaiian South Shore to talk story about core strength and surfing. We're always stoked to share knowledge that keeps our community riding longer, stronger, and pain-free.

Beachfront Battles: The Fight Against ErosionĀ

Our beloved Hawaiian beaches are facing a serious challenge. Climate change and urban development are causing significant erosion at two of Oahu's most iconic spots: Waikiki Beach and Sandy Beach. With approximately 70% of Hawaii's beaches actively eroding, here's what's happening and why it matters to every surfer and beach lover.

Waikiki's Battle The Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District Association (WBSIDA) isn't taking this lying down. They've invested millions in:

  • Sand replenishment projects ($500,000 in 2006, $3-4 million in 2012)
  • Construction of groins to retain sand
  • Exploration of long-term preservation strategies

Ā

Sandy Beach's Strategy Up at Sandy Beach, the community is taking a different approach:

  • Evaluating various retreat strategies
  • Focusing on "soft" ecological solutions instead of seawalls
  • Engaging the community in preservation efforts

What This Means for Surfers These erosion challenges directly affect our waves and beach access. While immediate solutions like sand replenishment help maintain our beloved breaks, long-term strategies are crucial for preserving these spots for future generations.
