TREAT YOUR FEET TO AN AT HOME MASSAGE

David Kelly | Owner, Hawaiian South Shore
Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter

We’ve been lucky this summer to have a few swells. Boy last year the surf was pretty bad. After surfing for several days in a row, my feet started to bother me. I think my feet really ache me most times because I’m flat footed. Also, often times when I work for several days on my feet, I do feel it. When I get that feeling of needing a massage, and I don’t have the time to go, I use my foot roller massage. Actually, I’ve had this machine for over 15 years now. I think maybe it’s closer to 20. I picked it up at the Shirokiya in Pearl Ridge. Anyway, I remember when I was getting it my wife said, “It would be best to spend the extra money so we have something we can use for many years.” Boy was she right again. I use this thing at least three times a week. Usually before I go to sleep, and to be honest, I also use it while I’m brushing my teeth… haha. It really helps me relax at night and I can get a good night sleep. I concentrate my time on the area where the bottom of my foot hurts the most. So, if you’ve been thinking about getting one, I highly recommend it. Don’t be a cheapskate, get one that is well built and a brand name. It will last you for years to come. I’m not sure of all the benefits of using the foot massager, so I googled it and read several lists, and the one below caught my attention. Benefits of a Foot Massage source: www.foottherapy.net While you are soothing your aching feet with a massage, you are also helping to improve circulation. Research has shown that massaging your feet for 10 minutes a day can dramatically improve blood flow to your lower extremities. Not only is this especially important for people with diabetes, but it can also help to improve the appearance of varicose veins. You also get the benefit of improved heart health with better circulation. Regular foot massage can also help to lower high blood pressure that is often caused by stress and tension. A Danish research study found that a short foot massage three times a week was effective at reducing high blood pressure and treating migraine headaches.

From carbon rails and memory flex to the most cutting-edge fins in the industry, if it’s high-tech and high-performance, we probably carry it. So, it is a no-brainer that we would want to carry Firewire boards, which have been an industry leader in strength, weight, and sustainability for over a decade. Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter As of June 2018, Firewire boards have been added to the Hawaiian South Shore quiver—and we are pretty excited about the models on our rack! Kelly Slater bought into Firewire a couple of years ago, and now produces various Slater Designs with the Firewire technology—including the Cymatic, Gamma, Omni, and Sci-Fi. Numerous world tour surfers have been seen on these boards, including Stu Kennedy and Kelly Slater himself. When it comes to thinking outside the box to develop the latest in high-performance shred sticks, this is about as good as it gets. Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter Rob Machado has also joined the team at Firewire as a shaper/designer and has his own range of boards. His GoFish is a high-tech twist on the retro fish, while the Moonbeam, Midas, and Creeper are hybrids that combine the functionality of modern performance boards with the user-friendly volume and outlines of trim-happy older designs. For the everyday surfer looking for fun in everyday conditions, Machado’s boards punch the ticket. Whether you are looking to improve your vertical attack or simply find a new way to keep your surfing fresh during the summer doldrums, Firewire has you covered—and we have your next Firewire! MEMBER OF THE MONTH Brian Fannin Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter When and what got you into surfing? I’ve always loved board sports and was a sponsored skateboarder for a few years in Dallas, TX before joining the Navy and be-ing stationed in Orlando, FL for schooling in 1992. As soon as I was near the ocean, I started to surf whenever I could. Did you have a time period you weren’t surfing? If so when and why did you start back up? Moving around in the Navy made it harder at times to surf. When I got out of the Navy, I moved back to Dallas to be close to my family. After 5 years of not being able to surf at all, I moved up to Washington and would go surf once a month. Surfing there was a weekend commitment, with a 200-mile drive, 6 hours on the road, and 42-52 degree water. No crowds and you float really good with all that rubber on. However, it wasn’t until I moved here at the beginning of 2011 before I truly started surfing regularly again. Where is your favorite place to eat after surfing? What is your favorite item? I LOVE an Outer Reef Burrito with the Bonsai Veggies from Wahoo’s Taco’s on Ward. What other hobbies do you have besides surfing? I played in bands for 10 years in the Seattle area and I still play the guitar occasionally. I haven’t been interested in join-ing a band again… it would take surfing time away from me. What do you do for work? I’m an IT Security professional. What board did you get from us? The JS Black Box II round tail in HiFy technology, 6’ x 21’ 1/4 x 2’9/16, 33l. (I’m 45, 6’ and 185lbs) Why did you decide on this model and size? I’ve been looking for an every-day type of board between my groveler (5’10”) and my HPSB (6’2”). I wanted it to be at least 20” wide because I mainly surf town and most of those waves need some width to plane on the fatter faces. I saw Brett surf him out at Diamond Head on a bigger day, and he was stoked on it. After doing some research, I thought it would be a great fit. How does it surf and what did you like about it? It surfs just like I wanted it to. It catches waves easily, turns great and it’s super-fast. I like how it reacts when I give it some juice. The board is faster than I expected, and I feel like I have a lot of room to grow with it. Have you used different fin setups? If so, what fins have you tried on that board? I’ve only ridden it as a thruster so far. Started with AM2’s, it was good, but the turns were a bit drawn out. Then for fun, I tried the AMT’s… nope, this board needs a rear fin for projection. I ended up trying a set of the new FCS2 Firewire fins. I’m pretty happy with them, as they are similar to the Futures Roberts fins I use in my HPSB but with flat foils. That being said, I am interested in trying the Andino’s based on David’s feedback. Would you like to add anything else? Thanks for the interview. I always appreciate the wealth of knowledge and down to earth staff at the shop. Keep up the good work!

REVIEWS ON RSC FROM STOKED CUSTOMERS Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter

What is RSC?  Real Suncover Sunscreen is an organic sunscreen that is made in the USA. It uses simple ingredients that you can pronounce and understand, not harmful chemicals that are toxic for your skin and the coral. Real Suncover Sunscreen sits on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it and uses organic zinc oxide as its base. It blocks both UVA and UVB rays, is fragrance-free and safe for babies, and is of course reef safe, meaning that you will be able to use it once Hawaii’s sunscreen ban law goes into effect. For those of us looking to save our skin while conforming with the new law, Real Suncover Sunscreen just might be the answer! We use our products, and we only bring in products we believe in. When we get reviews from customers it assures what we be-lieve in. Also, it lets our members know how great the products really are. Thank you for the constant reviews, we always appreciate the support. If you like a product from our store, please send us a review! “I have been using RSC for over 2 years now, works great, bet-ter than many others I had been using. I don’t burn like I used to and it’s organic, doesn’t sting if it gets in your eyes. Remember to shake the tube before applying and re-apply after 2 hours. Mahalo!” - David L. Honolulu “I’ve been using another popular product for a few years even before I was surfing. I used it frequently when I went to the beach with my friends but always had eye irritation. I thought the price was reasonable, so I kept using it until I met Brett and Dave from Hawaiian South Shore. They introduced 100% natural sunscreen that protects both your skin and the ocean. I was reluctant to purchase it right away because of the price and the size of the sunscreen (small). After I began surfing, I needed a type of sunscreen that couldn’t wash off easily. So, I decided to give it a try. After two months of usage, I regret not buying this product earlier. Even with a small amount of either stick or creme type, it’s good enough for you to stay out in the water for 2-3 hours. The best thing about this sunscreen is that you will NOT get an eye irritation. This just tells me that this sunscreen is 100% natural and a trustworthy product. I’ve been recommending this product to my friends from S. Korea when they visit me, and they love it too. It’s very portable and easy to use. One thing though, I use a makeup removal oil to remove the sunscreen off my face completely. I definitely recommend this sunscreen to anyone whether you surf or not, because this product protects not only your skin but also our environment.” - David C. (our new member that recently moved into the neigh-borhood)

The Hawaiian model – Coming Soon! We’ll have 9’2, 9’4, and 9’6 coming in. First time hearing about this model? Not many know about it, so read on to find out a little more! TALKING BOARD DESIGN WITH DONALD TAKAYAMA Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter Donald Takayama has been a legend of our sport for decades, enjoying a success-ful competitive career and a second career as an influential shaper. When we lost him half a decade ago, we lost one of surfing’s greats. His influence both on a surfboard and behind a planer can never be fully quantified. He surely touched thousands of lives throughout his lifetime. I was fortunate enough to be one of those people. The time I spent chatting with Donald made for some of my favorite memories and taught me so much about surfing and surfboards in particular. A few years before Takayama passed away, I had an opportunity to chat with him about board designs. At the time, his In-the-Pink model was one of my favorites. In-the-Pink is a high-performance nose-rider that is probably the most popular model in Takayama’s range, and it definitely worked for me. However, on bigger, windy days, I found that the nose would sometimes get caught in the chop. I mentioned this to Donald and he decided to put together a new model. This sort of bridged the gap between the In-the-Pink and DT-2 (which was his all-rounder model). Takayama ended up scaling down the outline of the In-the-Pink model, and integrated some aspects of the DT-2, creating a model that did exactly what I’d hoped for! We ended up calling it the “Hawaiian,” named after our shop, Hawaiian South Shore. That was one of my favorite boards, shaped by one of my favorite surfer/shapers. The opportunity to spend time with our heroes, and the people who shape the boards we develop relationships with, is what sets surfing apart as such a unique and special “sport.” For every wave we ride throughout our surfing lives, we have people like Takayama to thank.
THE LOWER CROSSED SYNDROME By Spencer Chang, MD Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon at Straub Medical Center WSL Orthopaedic Consultant Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter The lower crossed syndrome (LCS) is the result of imbalances in the lower half of the body. In LCS, there is an overactivity and hence tightness of hip flexors and lumbar extensors (lower back muscles). In addition, there is an underactivity and therefore weakness of the deep abdominal muscles and the gluteus maximus and medius (butt muscles). Hamstrings are also commonly tight. Consequently, the imbalances result in an anterior tilt of the pelvis, and increased curvature in the lum-bar spine (hyperlordosis). You look like you’re standing with your butt hanging out and your belly falling forward… sound familiar? The muscle imbalances create joint dysfunction (ligamentous strain and increased pressure especially at the L4-L5, and L5-S1 levels, as well as the sacroiliac joint and hip joint), joint pain (lower back, hip, and knee), and specific postural changes such as: anterior pelvic tilt, increased lumbar lordosis, lateral lumbar shift, external rotation of the hip, and knee hyperextension. It can also lead to increased thoracic kyphosis and increased cervical lordosis. There are two subtypes A and B as shown by the pictures below. Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter Hawaiian South Shore August Newsletter                           Type A                                                                            Type B Type A is the type I see most commonly in surfers and nearly everyone who has a sit-down job at work. So, if your posture looks like either A or B, you probably have lower crossed syndrome, and may have back problems, hip, or knee problems. These can often be worked out in physical therapy, mostly focusing on specific stretching. Let me know if we can help. For an appointment call the Straub Bone and Joint Center at 522-4232. OUR MEET AND GREET EVENT WAS A BIG HIT! A big THANK YOU goes out to Rainbow Drive-In for all the Ono food they made for our Meet and Greet event last month. We had a lot of local pros show up and the shop was packed the entire time from 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM.

This is the first time in the last 21 years, experiencing something like this. Yu San, the man that is behind the technology for Thunderbolt is a former pro surfer. He’s known CJ Nelson since he was 14 years old. Yu San is all about making boards that surf better and bounces his ideas off of CJ Nelson, Harley Ingleby and Ben Skinner. I watched and listened to these guys for a whole week during our big event and they collaborate well together. They offer each other advice on board designs and performance. It’s really amazing to see these guys helping each other out and I’m honored to be a part of a company that supports us back. This has been an experience like no other. They shared so much information about what they have going on with their boards and they’re working toward pushing the envelope by using materials that nobody else in the surf industry are using. A little fun fact to add is that Ben Skinner is a new addition to the Thunderbolt line of boards. Here is a little story about Ben: Honolua Blomfield, from Hawaii was recently in the UK with her father when she ran into Ben Skinner. She was in town for a con-test and he offered her his board. He said ‘ride it and if you like it, use it. If you don’t like it, please give it back.’ Well she fell in love with the board and ended up winning a few contests on it. Right now, she is #1 in the world, so she has some credibility for sure! During the time they were here during our event, I was able to surf with them and trade out boards. The flex on these boards is really incredible. You can pump them and get a lot of drive. The boards are light when you carry them, but they are not corky, so on windy, choppy days, they can handle well. Again, thank you all of you for attending our event, we had a great turnout and we appreciate your support!

A few days before the big event we hosted on July 14th with Thunderbolt Technologies, the CEO of FCS stopped by to discuss a few things as we are working really closely with FCS. I had all the pros come in to talk story with us as well. CJ Nelson, Harley Ingleby, Ben Skinner, Ezra Rodriguez, and Mark Nelson (CEO of Thunderbolt) joined us. During our meet up, Brian Brannon came in to demo a CJ Nelson Sprout model. Brian lives in San Diego, CA and was in Hawaii for training, but had to stop by Hawaiian South Shore because he is pumped about our shop. Brian was the lead singer in JFA (Jodie Foster’s Army), a hardcore punk band, formed in 1981. He has been on the cover of Thrasher magazine two times and used to be a pro skate boarder. When I told the pros who he was, CJ Nelson was the most pumped because he used to listen to JFA when he was younger. Man, it was really cool to see Brian, CJ even got photos with him!
