Kelly Slater Eliminated from World Tour for First Time in His Career

Kelly Slater Eliminated from World Tour for First Time in His Career   Yesterday was a big day in Western Australia. With the Margaret River Pro moving into the main rounds, approximately half of the men’s world tour was in danger of being dropped at the mid-season cutoff. A total of 22 out of the top 34 remain on tour after Margaret River, but with the fight requalification coming down to this event, no one below the top 10 line was truly safe.   View this post on Instagram A post shared by World Surf League (@wsl)   The round...

The Lower Crossed Syndrome

THE LOWER CROSSED SYNDROME By Spencer Chang, MD Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Surgeon at Straub Medical Center WSL Orthopaedic Consultant   The lower crossed syndrome (LCS) is the result of imbalances in the lower half of the body. In addition, there is an underactivity and therefore weakness of the deep abdominal muscles and the gluteus maximus and medius (butt muscles). Hamstrings are also commonly tight. Consequently, the imbalances result in an anterior tilt of the pelvis, and increased curvature in the lum-bar...

Natxo Gonzalez Paddles into Historic Barrel at Nazare Challenge

"Natxo Gonzalez falling out of the sky at Pe'ahi in 2016. Photo: WSL/Richard Hallman"   Natxo Gonzalez Paddles Historic Barrel at Nazare Challenge The Nazare Challenge went down in near-flawless conditions last week, with 15-20+ waves and light offshore winds. Spanish charger and surf explorer Natxo Gonzalez was one of the standout performers, making the final and ending up in third place (which also positions him well for the world title race, since there are only three events each year). And while Grant “Twiggy” Baker ended up winning the event, Natxo stole the day with what most agree is the...

Getting to Know Cliff Kapono Vissla’s Man of Many Roles

Over the years, surfing has had a wide variety of characters, ranging from chargers and contenders to kooks and clowns. While these luminaries have worn numerous coats as surfers, shapers, documentarians, and innovators, true renaissance men have been few and far between. But Hawaii currently has a true renaissance man in its ranks, a surfer who brings together academia, philosophy, environmentalism, innovation, athleticism, and marketability. Clifford Kapono grew up on the big island and comes from a respected Hawaiian family. While he was a talented surfer growing up, his family emphasized the importance of education. After graduating from Kamehameha High...

Hawaiians Lead World Tour Heading into European Leg

For the first time in 2022, we saw the WSL World Tour run a complete slate of events in Hawaii as part of the season opener, with both Pipe and Sunset delivering excellent conditions, exciting competition, and a fair share of drama. Gabriel Medina started the year off with a surprise announcement that he’d be stepping away from competition for an indefinite break, which opened the door for injury wildcards such as Ivan Florence and Caio Ibelli. Meanwhile, on the women’s side we saw a new crop of rookies led by Bettylou Sakura Johnson, as well as exciting Pipeline wildcard...

Jack Robinson Makes a Statement at G-Land While John John Is Plagued with More Knee Issues

Sometimes it feels like Hawaii’s favorite local son can’t catch a break. John John Florence came into the sixth event of the year looking like a lock for the championship event at Trestles in September. He was rated second, after Felipe Toledo, with a number of pet events on the back half of the schedule. Barring some sort of cataclysmic meltdown—and a huge late-season push from someone behind him on the ratings—Florence was pretty much guaranteed a spot in the top five at the end of the year, which meant he’d surf for the title. Then the tour went back...
