Understanding Fin Rake and Why It Is So Important

What is Fin Rake? There are a lot of factors that go into making a surfboard work, from rocker and outline to rail shape and bottom contours. Fins are also a hugely influential design element, although most people only have a basic understanding of how their fins interact with the water and board. SURFING NEWS AUGUST 2021 Surfline Spirit Sessions With Ezra Rodriguez and Hawaiian South Shore Surfrider Spirit Sessions were created in 2006 through a collaboration between executive director Cynthia Y.H. Deroisier and Girl’s Court therapist Emma Pavich. Inspired by Deroisier’s book “The Surfer Spirit,” Pavich asked Deroisier to join her in creating a program that used surfing as a platform to reach at-risk children. In 2009, Surfline Spirit Sessions became a registered, independent non-profit corporation, and it received its 501©(3) status in 2010. It provides six events each year for 100 Oahu youth (during spring, summer, and fall), exposing them to...

Keeping Your Knees Surf-Ready with Controlled Articular Rotations The knees is one of the most important joints in the body, and knees are particularly important for surfers, since most of our movements on a wave are powered by our core and upper legs. Surfing is a dynamic sport that involves a lot of twisting and torquing movements, which means that the knees are put through a lot of stress during every session. In order to ensure that we are surfing at our best—and to help reduce the risk of injury—it is important to maintain healthy, flexible knees that are ready for...

The History and Practicality of the “Fifth Fin” and How Dan Mann Has Recently Been Using It as Part of His “Secret Recipe”

Surfing is an ever-evolving sport, and one of the most intriguing innovations in surfboard design is the fifth fin. This additional fin has gained popularity among surfers looking to enhance their performance and control on the waves.  What is the Fifth Fin? The fifth fin is an extra fin added to a surfboard, typically alongside the traditional thruster setup of three fins. This innovation aims to improve stability, maneuverability, and overall performance in various surf conditions. Hawaiian South Shore May Newsletter

I’m Going to Fall off This Ship! When I finished high school, I was ready for some adventure. College just didn’t seem to be the answer, so I started looking around for other options. My dad was a master gunnery sergeant in the Marines and was very traditional. He had made it clear that I’ll be on my own when I turn 18, so when college didn’t work out and I decided to do something else, I hit the road. I headed for Reno, Nevada, where my aunt lived, and started working odd jobs. That got old pretty quick, so...
