Surfboard Fins 101

Surfboard Fins 101   Tom Blake Picture from www.surfmuseum.org When Tom Blake put an abandoned boat keel onto his redwood surfboard in 1934, he had no idea the innovation explosion he was about to spark. The addition of a fin made boards infinitely more maneuverable, which led to progression both in how waves were approached and what waves were approachable.   Keel fin Picture form True Ames Fins Bob Simmons improved on Blake’s keel fin in the 1940s, building a more raked keel that is still in use today on some types of boards. He is also credited with building...

Coco Ho: Surfing Royalty and Her Impact on the Sport Coco Ho is part of one surfing’s greatest dynasties. The daughter of North Shore legend Mike Ho, niece of world champion Derek Ho, and sister of one of the sports funniest and most charismatic characters (Mason, of course!), it would have been easy for Coco to get lost in the shadow of her star-studded family. Instead, she has become one of the world’s most popular surfers—with both female and male fans—due to her world tour success, stylish approach to waves, down-to-earth attitude, and equally stunning smile and personality. Early Life...

JS Industries "Big Baron" Surfboard Review by Jacob

REVIEW: JS Industries Big Baron Surfboard Jacob recently picked up the 7'6 JS Big Baron and has been using it in various surf conditions. He initially struggled with the board at Diamond Head and Northshore, but found it more suitable for smaller waves at Gas Chambers. Jacob currently uses the Power Twins fins, which provide good hold and performance. He describes the board as having a fast takeoff and gliding well, but admits that it doesn't have the same hold and snap on the top as his previous board. Jacob is still trying to figure out the board's performance and may consider...

Surfboard Tail Designs – What’s the difference between them?

A note from HSS owner, David Kelly... In our Oct 2017 newsletter, Spencer Chang said that the MR Super Twin is by far the best board he's ridden—and that says a lot, because he's purchased a number of boards from us over the years. He said he liked the way the swallow tail felt. That reminded me of the Hayden Untitled I once rode. It was a friend's board, and I remember it actually had way too much float for me. The first wave I took off on was overhead, and I thought I was going to get pitched. But...

Understanding FCS’s Fin Families

FCS has been a leader in the removable fin industry for decades, and each year they find new ways to evolve their lineup of products. Here at Hawaiian South Shore we have a large stock of FCS fins, including the four different FCS families: Performer, Carver, Reactor, and Accelerator. Each of these families of fins is designed for different styles of surfing, different types of waves, and different types of boards. The Performer Family is a series of great, all-around fins that have an inside foil for a bit more squirt through turns and pumps. Meanwhile, The Carver Family...

Firewire Sweet Potato Surfboard Review by Chad

Sweet Potato Surfboard Review Meet Chad, a loyal customer of Hawaiian South Shore who can't resist adding a new board to his quiver whenever he visits. Chad is particularly smitten with his latest acquisition, the Sweet Potato. Chad shares his excitement about the 6'2 Sweet potato. Perfectly suited for his 5'10, 220-pound frame.  Interestingly, Chad shares that he used to ride longboards for quite some time but eventually transitioned to shortboards as he grew older (although he prefers to say "more experienced"). With the advent of shortboards designed for surfers of all shapes and sizes, Chad found the Sweet Potato...

How to Surf Better Part 6 of 9: Choosing the Right Board

Written By Matt Rode (Surfline's head of Maps to Nowhere series)   Buying your first surfboard—or any new board, for that matter—is an exciting experience. But it can also be a very confusing one, since there are so many different options out there. Not only are there dozens of different worldwide surf brands (and thousands of local shapers around the world), but there are also a number of different types of boards, ranging from longboards and funboards to shortboards, hybrids, retros, and specialty boards such as big wave guns and logs.  To help you figure out what board is best...

Hawaiian South Shore December Newsletter Part 2

The Attempt to Translate Sperm Whale’s Clicks and Find a Way to Communicate With Them I recently discovered Hakai Magazine, which presents a bunch of interesting content about coastal science. One of the articles that really stood out to me was about project that is working to interpret the sounds made by sperm whales with artificial intelligence and then communicate back to them! Photo Credit to projectceti.org Named Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), the program began in March of 2020, but was inspired by a group of international scientists who were working together at Harvard in 2017. They noticed that the...

Hawaiian South Shore May 2021 Newsletter

NEWSLETTER MAY 2021   Sweet Potatoes As you all know, I love food and checking out different dishes and flavors, especially those that originate in Japan. At the same time, I am also always looking for ways to make my diet healthier and more nutritious. One way I have found to do both—eat healthier and more delicious—is through sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes aren’t actually potatoes at all. Instead, they are a nutrient-dense root vegetable with way more vitamins than normal potatoes. They are particularly rich in vitamin A, E, and C, carotenoids, and other antioxidants. They are also high in...
