Understanding the World Surf League’s Mid-Year Cutoff and What It Means for Our Favorite World Tour Competitors

Understanding the World Surf League’s Mid-Year Cutoff and What It Means for Our Favorite World Tour Competitors If you’re as big a fan of professional surfing as we are, then you may have found yourself wondering what the commentary team at the Bells Beach Pro were talking about when they kept referencing the mid-year cutoff. For those of you who still don’t fully understand the World Surf League’s new format—and we don’t blame you, because it’s painfully complicated—here’s a comprehensive explanation of how it works and how it affects your favorite competitors. First of all, as in year’s past, the...

Steph Gilmore Sets Record with Eighth World Title, Felipe Toledo Wins His First

It was a nonstop day of action at Lower Trestles today as the WSL sought to finish the Rip Curl World Surf League Finals before bad weather from Hurricane Kay impacts Southern California.   In a pair of marathon displays of athleticism, both Steph Gilmore and Italo Ferreira surfed their way from match one all the way to the final, contesting three heats each to earn the right to face off against top-seeded Carissa Moore and Felipe Toledo in a best-of-three showdown for the world championship. Gilmore beat Brisa Hennessey, Tatiana Weston-Webb and Johanne Defay on her way to the...

Felipe Toledo and Caroline Marks Crowned World Champions After Incredible Day of Surfing at Lower Trestles

The World Surf League came to Lower Trestles today, and it was everything you could want from a world title showdown. From firing, rippable, overhead peaks to mind-melting performances, today’s contest was high-fi surfing at its best—and when the spray settled, the best in the world were crowned world champions. Caroline Marks Wins Her First World Title Photo Credit to WSL For most of the day, it looked like pink was the winning color. The third seeded surfers on the men’s and women’s fields wore pink jerseys, and from heat two until the final heat of the day, it was...

Hawaiian South Shore January 2022 Newsletter Part 2 of 2

Traditional Tofu in Okinawa and Kalihi Growing up in Okinawa, tofu was a major part of my diet—and it also exposed me to some interesting experiences! I remember visiting some relatives on a small island called Henza that is connected to Okinawa by a land bridge. I stayed there for a few months, and remember that you had to park your car in a neighborhood parking lot, and then walk into the village because the roads were really small the houses were really close. It sort of felt like a National Geographic scene, and it was an interesting place...

The Firewire Omni

The Firewire Omni

Double-enders have always been a weird little niche in the world of surfboard shapes—almost snowboardish in design, with noses and tails that are difficult to differentiate between. Tomo loves unique, innovative designs, so it’s no surprise that he’d come up with his own version of a double-ender. What is surprising, however, in our world of cookie-cutter shortboards, is how popular the Omni has become. Ever since Slater tore the Surf Ranch apart on the disc-shaped board during the WSL’s test event, the Omni has been a solid staple of the Firewire/Slater Designs quiver.

World Title Race Tightens Up After a Bumpy Event in El Salvador

World Title Race Tightens Up After a Bumpy Event in El Salvador

When the government of El Salvador decided to invest tens of millions of dollars in their “Surf City” rebranding—including millions for the right to host a world tour event at the country’s crown jewel of Punta Roca—we are guessing their plan wasn’t to broadcast a bunch of small, onshore days to the world. Unfortunately, you can plan a pretty event, but you can’t predict the weather, and the perfect right-hand point break in La Libertad had a pretty horrible forecast during the entire event waiting period. After half a dozen flat days, the event finally ran in bumpy, mixed-up swell...

Shion Crawford and Nora Liotta Win as Sunset Opens Hawaiian Contest Season

Sunset Opens Hawaiian Contest Season Even though the main WSL tours have all completed competition for the year and crowned their champions, the WQS tour never really stops—and here in Hawaii, contest season is just getting started!  This past week, the Sunset Pro QS 1000 event was the first chance of the winter season for local Hawaiian surfers to start accruing points toward qualification for the 2024 Challenger Series (which is the first step toward qualifying for the world tour). Conditions ranged from overhead and rippable to small and semi-contestable, but, as always, the guys behind the event got things...

2022 Surfing End of Year Wrap Up

End of Year Wrap Up   The Haleiwa Pro was contested last week, ending the challenger series and the professional competitive year as a whole. Hawaii’s favorite son John John Florence was in peak form, winning the event once again and ending the year on a high note after suffering an injury mid-season that caused him to miss a number of events and his chance at fighting for the world title at Trestles. It was great to see Florence back in form and healed up from his knee injury. Hopefully he can stay healthy this coming season! On the women’s...

Drug Aware Margaret River Pro - Going Small to Go Bi

Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Going Small to Go Big The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro is on this week over in West Australia, the second stop on the WSL world tour. And to be honest, the main venue at Margaret River Main Break is not the most exciting wave in the world to surf or watch. The backup venues of North Point and The Box are exciting—North Point is the ultimate barrel to boost setup, and The Box is one of the original slabs—but we usually don’t get more than a day of competition at the backups, which is...
