Lost California Twin Surfboard Review by Kegan Edward

California Twin Surfboard Review Kegan Edwards shares his thoughts on the California Twin fish surfboard he recently picked up. As a long time longboarder, Kegan was looking to add a shortboard to his quiver. After taking the Twin out at Kaizer's and Half Point in choppy, windy conditions, he's been thoroughly impressed with its performance and versatility. Initially worried the board may feel too small coming from longboards, Kegan says the Twin's paddling, float and stability have put those concerns to rest. At 5'9" to 5'10" and around 165-170 lbs, he opted for the 5'0" model with approximately 32-34 liters...

NEWSLETTER MARCH 2021   Cargo Slowed Due to COVID-19 at Los Angeles Port - Expect Shipping Delays As if COVID-19 hasn’t affected life enough already over the past year, the latest news out of Los Angeles is that there is a huge backlog of cargo ships stuck offshore. WHAT...? I DON'T UNDERSTAND? David Kelly | Owner, Hawaiian South Shore Back in 1990 or so, I was in the Navy. I remember when I first came to Hawaii, a lot of places reminded me of Okinawa, especially around Tantalus area and certain parts of Kaimuki. I went out to dinner with some friends after being here for about six months or so, I remember the place was called the Chuck Wagon or something like that, on Kapiolani. I think it was near McKinley Car Wash. I remember I had to make a phone call, and of course, in those...

A Glimpse into Mason Ho's Unique Surfing Equipment Choices

Mason Ho is one of the most entertaining people in surfing, so when he releases media of any sort, we tend to tune in. He is also one of the most creative surfers in terms of the equipment that he uses, so when he drops a video talking about his boards and fins, we really sit up and take notice.  Shallow Reef Fins A few months back, Mason collaborated with FCS on a video talking about what he has been riding and working on. The first thing he went into was his fins for shallow reefs (which Mason is notorious...

Hawaiian South Shore November 2021 Newsletter Part 1

How to Deal with a Wipeout The surf media spends a lot of time focusing on huge wipeouts in XXL waves—and for good reason. These wipeouts are dramatic and terrifying, and at times dangerous and life-threatening. But most people will never surf waves that large or experience wipeouts of that magnitude. Indeed, the majority of wipeouts that people take are in the under-triple-overhead range, yet they can still be stressful and even dangerous. This is why it is so important to learn how to wipeout properly and in the safest possible manner. The first thing to keep in mind when...

TOYS FOR TOTS David Kelly | Owner, Hawaiian South Shore Most of my childhood was spent growing up overseas in the Far East. We moved around a lot because my dad was in the Marine Corps and was always deployed somewhere. Mom would work evenings to help make ends meet. I remember for Christmas she would often make clothes for us or even remake old clothing into something new. She picked that up from my grandmother, who owned a used clothing store after the war. Grandma would get clothes from the GI’s, which is what they used to call military...

Apnea Surf Survival Class By David Kelly, Owner, Hawaiian South Shore Did you get a chance to read last month’s article by Matt Rott about wipeouts, hold-downs and how to survive them? Well that inspired me to take a class because I know 20 seconds feels a lot longer for me and sometimes I feel like I’m not able to hold my breath long enough when I get wiped out. When I posted that article on our blog and Facebook, one of our members sent us a link about a class called “Apnea Surf Survival Class.” I’ve heard about this...
