Hawaiian South Shore December Newsletter Part 2

The Attempt to Translate Sperm Whale’s Clicks and Find a Way to Communicate With Them I recently discovered Hakai Magazine, which presents a bunch of interesting content about coastal science. One of the articles that really stood out to me was about project that is working to interpret the sounds made by sperm whales with artificial intelligence and then communicate back to them! Photo Credit to projectceti.org Named Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), the program began in March of 2020, but was inspired by a group of international scientists who were working together at Harvard in 2017. They noticed that the...

CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0: Gear Review by Matt Rode Matt, who typically rides shortboards but weighs 150 lbs, found the ample 76+ liters of volume on the CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0 allowed him to regularly catch more than his fair share of waves. The surfboard's dedicated noserider design performed as expected, with easy entry and positioning, even in steeper, more critical waves. While not designed for radical turns, Matt noted that CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0 excelled at the type of turning required for setting up noserides. He found power turns like drop-knee cutbacks to be the most effective for redirecting the board....

Sukeroku BentoThe Sushi Dish You’ve Eaten Without Knowing! One of the best things about traveling is trying new food—and nowhere has better food than Japan. Sushi is the first thing that pops to mind for most people when they think of eating in Japan, but what many people don’t know is that there are actually a number of different types of sushi. Two of the most popular are combined in something called a sukeroku bento—a dish you may not have heard of before, but have likely seen dozens of times in Hawaii. A sukeroku bento is the classic sushi sampler...

Hawaiian South Shore Member of the Month (October 2021) - Ari Fisher

Hawaiian South Shore Member of the Month - Ari Fisher When and why did you initially get into surfing? I first leaned to surf as a kid in California from my best friend’s dad who grew up here on Oahu. The joy of spending the morning with family topped off with a hard earned In N’ Out burger, fries, and shake are some of my best memories.    Did you have a time period you laid off from surfing? If so, when and why did you start back up? After a couple of seasons, I ended up moving away for school.  After...

CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0: Gear Review by Matt Rode

Brand: CJ Nelson Surfboard  (traditional longboard)Model: Sprout 2.0Length: 9'6" (76.2 liters)Construction: Thunderbolt SilverNumber of sessions: 20+Types of conditions: Ankle to chest-high+ running walls, in conditions ranging from clean/offshore to blown out/onshore.   SHOP NOW Paddling I weigh 150 pounds and ride shortboards most of the time, so the ample 76+ liters of volume in this board meant I regularly caught more than my fair share of waves. Entry was exactly as you’d expect for a dedicated noserider—as long as you are in early and know how to position a log, the lack of rocker up front doesn’t matter. In steeper,...

Paul Naude and the History of Vissla Many people know about the brand Vissla—it has gone from being a boutique cottage brand to an industry staple over the past five years—but few people know the story of how it started. NEWSLETTER JUNE 2020 The History and Science of Surf Reporting and Forecasting on Oahu All of those who surf and live in Hawaii have become accustomed to daily surf reports and forecasts, but many of us are unaware of the science and history that go into those reports. This information is not only interesting for us from a cultural perspective, but also useful in better understanding the ocean and swells, which in turn makes us better watermen and women. The original surf reports were anecdotal observations from surfers and other coastal people. In 1968, a man named Larry Goddard began...

The Importance of Breath When Preparing to Surf by Matt Rode

What Works, What Doesn’t, and How to Identify Trendy Misinformation Dave sent me a link to an Instagram video yesterday and wanted to know what I thought about it. It starts with Jack Robinson doing aggressive breathing exercises on the beach before one of his heats, then goes into an explanation of why he is doing these exercises, how to do them, and the purported benefits of doing so. Dave knows that I have done a lot of breathwork, pranayama, and apnea training over the years, and wanted to know if this so-called “piston” training was legit, and if it...

Keeping Your Knees Surf-Ready with Controlled Articular Rotations

The knees is one of the most important joints in the body, and knees are particularly important for surfers, since most of our movements on a wave are powered by our core and upper legs. Importance of Healthy Knees for Surfing Surfing is a dynamic sport that involves a lot of twisting and torquing movements, which means that the knees are put through a lot of stress during every session. In order to ensure that we are surfing at our best—and to help reduce the risk of injury—it is important to maintain healthy, flexible knees that are ready for anything....

Simple Exercises to Improve Hip Strength and Mobility—So You Can Surf Better!

We often think about upper body strength and mobility when it comes to surfing, but sometimes we forget how important lower body flexibility and power is when it comes to the fundamentals of wave riding. Everything from popping up on a board to pumping down the line and linking together maneuvers requires precise coordination of the lower body, which is only possible if all of your muscles and joints are firing together. One area that a lot of surfers struggle with is hip strength and mobility. I know I definitely do! This has been a bit challenge for me as I have...
